Hello and welcome to Korora Counselling. My name is Alex, I am a qualified counsellor and a registered member of the BACP (British Association of Counselling Psychotherapy).
We all have times in life when things can feel challenging and overwhelming, when we might feel anxious or low. This might relate to issues at work, relationships, family dynamics or ill health and bereavement. Or perhaps dealing with neurodiversity, for instance dyslexia, of which I have both personal and professional experience. It can be helpful at times like these to take support from those we are close to but it can also be helpful to talk to someone outside our immediate support to help us get a fresh perspective on what is going on and how we might begin to address things. This is where counselling can help.
My core model is person centred, which means exactly what is says, my approach recognises we all have the skills to be personally motivated to grow as a person.
A bit about my background, before qualifying as a counsellor I worked in the NHS for +20 years as a Radiographer, before specialising as a Sonographer. I have a Bachelor of Science in Radiography followed by a Postgraduate in Ultrasound, both from London South Bank University. During my time with the NHS, I worked all over the UK from Scotland to Sussex, as well as internationally in Australia and Zanzibar. I very much loved my work, caring for people who needed my help, it was a very rewarding experience.
My path to moving into counselling was a very natural one, it had always interested me, particularly after experiencing counselling myself. It seemed a very obvious choice, putting my skills learnt over many years as a healthcare professional to good use.
My more recent experience of working as both an advocate and as a counsellor includes working for mental health charity Journeyman (NW England), domestic abuse charities (male and female) and Age UK (nationally). I also run my own private practice - Korora Counselling.
I also have had personal experience of counselling in my life so I understand you may feel unsure in starting counselling. However, my own counselling journey helped me so much and I would like to give you the time, support and help to complete your counselling journey, whatever and wherever that may take you.
You’ve taken the first step by getting this far, feel free to search my page for more information about how I can help you or please contact me for a short no obligation chat.

Areas of practice
I work with adults over 18 online and over the telephone, with a broad range of experiences.
For me counselling is, to put it plainly, a form of talk therapy. As a counsellor I will be warm, responsive, and non-judgmental to help form a counselling relationship with you. This relationship is important for you to feel comfortable enough to speak to me openly and for us to build mutual trust.
In forming a counselling relationship with me we both have our part to play, however, you will always be the most important person in this relationship. I will always show a genuine interest in you as a unique person in your own right.
Our counselling journey will come to a natural end, but at any time, if we feel another counsellor or specialist help would be more appropriate, we will discuss this. As a counsellor, I have a duty of care to you at all times. Anything and everything we do will be discussed and your decision is of the utmost importance in this.

Accessibility Comments
I offer online counselling to all my clients and I use an app called Doxy for this. Doxy is an industry standard confidential, encrypted application specifically designed with healthcare in mind that is easy for us both to use. I can also use Zoom, Skype or Teams if that is your preference.
When using Doxy once we make an appointment to talk online, I will send you a link either via email, text or Whats App & all you need to do is click on that link when your appointment time is due. You don't need to download anything beforehand. When you click the link, it will take you into a virtual waiting room until our appointment starts, and I will let you in to your session with me.To get the best out of our sessions you should be in a quiet room with no distractions. You need to be on your own and not overheard so you can focus on you alone and not be disturbed. That will also help us maintain the confidentiality that is so important to our counselling relationship.
If you are having online sessions, a stable Wi-Fi connection is important - and that includes me!
I also offer phone appointments if that suits you better. Please discuss your preference with me so we can approach this in whatever way makes you the most comfortable.
