Episode 4: The experience of trans and non-binary trainees

Is the person-centred approach a queer theory? What are the gaps, what’s missing from awareness and what are the downright failures of training for trans and non-binary trainees – and where lies the hope in person-centred queerness?

Rachael speaks to LJ Loveys (they/he/she), a person-centred trainee.

Rachael writes:  LJ and I were both curious about each other’s experience and felt excitement in the discovery that emerged from this. I learnt a tremendous amount from LJ in their training experiences and what brought them to this path. We both appreciated the space for contemplating our ideal training and this feels like an ongoing conversation. We need more spaces for contemplating queer utopias!

When considering the experiences of transgender and non-binary people and person-centred therapy, Sam Hope’s work would be a first port of call. Their website is packed full of valuable resources. Jay McCarthy’s paper on trans experiencing within Rogers’ theory of personality is also of value. Sabah Choudrey also provides informative resources within their website with a focus on trans and non-binary People of Colour.
