The FDP: Racism in Counselling, with Suzanne Keys

Highams Park, London E4 9PB
£70 including lunch and refreshments
For The FDP: Racism in counselling, with Suzanne Keys - Friday, 15th May 2020

This workshop will provide an opportunity to articulate and explore our experiences of racism as counsellors and clients and what we can do to improve our anti-oppressive practice to ensure that people of colour are not harmed by the experience of counselling.
We will look at racial identity development models, double consciousness, colour blindness, internalised racism and white fragility.
These are difficult conversations to have because they include acknowledging parts of ourselves and society we find challenging. However, finding spaces where we can do this together is one of the ways we can ensure we are ethical practitioners.
Suzanne is a white counsellor with 20 years’ experience of working on her racism as part of ongoing personal and professional development. She is motivated to continue to challenge herself by wanting to not participate in the devastating impact of racism on people's mental health. She has worked as a student counsellor in Newham Sixth Form College since 2000, as a trainer on a Diploma in Counselling at City Lit and freelance author and CPD facilitator. She has just started working as a mental health trainer for the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust.
