Basic Skills in Counselling and Listening

An introductory level course with a person-centred focus

Ever thought about a career in counselling or want to improve your listening skills?

In work, relationships and everyday interactions we speak to one another and communicate easily. When listening however, we can become distracted, thinking about what comes after the conversation, worrying about how to provide an answer or trying to think up a solution. Sometimes we want to fix things for the person that is sharing with us.

The purpose of this course is to challenge some of these ways of interacting and to go back to basics. We will explore what it means to be heard and listened to by another, in a way where we feel seen and understood.  As well as developing active listening  skills, participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own experiences of being heard and of being the in the role of the listener. We will explore basic concepts of person-centred counselling such as empathy and non-directive responding. Participants will work experientially with one another to experiment with these concepts.  Our hope is that by the end of the course participants will  understand what it means to actively listen to an other  have gained an awareness of what listening is for them an overview of basic person-centred counselling theory

This course will start on on Saturday 18th April 2020 and end on Saturday 13th June 2020 (both 10am - 5pm) we will also meet on 6 Wednesday evenings (from 7pm -9pm) between these dates.
