A seminar led by Richard Allsup. "Substance abuse is a growing, but mostly silent, epidemic amongst older adults" Dr Sumedra Chhatre 2017. Research by The Royal College of Psychiatrists (2017) shows that a third of older people develop alcohol problems for the first time in their later life, stating bereavement as a key factor. By comparison, substance use among people under the age of 18 has steadily decreased in the last decade. Today, the fastest growing substance misuse group is the over 65s - a challenge to the traditional stereotype.
